Microscopic, single-celled organisms called foraminifera have a fossil record that extends from today to more than 500 million years ago. Although each foram is just a single cell, they build complex shells around themselves from minerals in the seawater.

The oldest known fossil foraminifera are agglutinated tubes three or four centimetres long. These were the first textulariids, a group of foraminifera still found living today, 570 million years after they first evolved. Although each foram is just a single cell, they build complex shells around themselves from minerals in the seawater. They get their name from the foramen, an opening or tube that interconnects all the chambers of the test. Fossilised tests are found in sediments as old as the earliest Cambrian (about 545 million years ago) and foraminifera can still be found in abundance today, living in marine and brackish waters.
