Länsstyrelsen i Västra Götaland har startat ett Pilotprojekt ”eDNA-analys av lodjursspår i snö, en metod att Environmental DNA (eDNA) is organismal DNA that can be found in the environment. Environmental DNA originates from cellular material shed by organisms (via skin, excrement, etc.) into aquatic or terrestrial environments that can be sampled and monitored using new molecular methods. The DNA that is found in the environment is called “environmental DNA” or eDNA (e-DNA) for short, and it is formally defined as “genetic material obtained directly from environmental samples without any obvious signs of biological source material” (Thomsen and Willerslev, 2015). Environmental DNA or eDNA is DNA that is collected from a variety of environmental samples such as soil, seawater, snow or even air rather than directly sampled from an individual organism. As various organisms interact with the environment, DNA is expelled and accumulates in their surroundings from various sources. Environmental DNA (eDNA) is nuclear or mitochondrial DNA that is released from an organism into the environment.
